I've been forced to daily drive it for the next two weeks and I now have a problem. The button to move the gear selector from Park to Drive now sticks. When it gets stuck, I can freely select gears, but canot keep it in one place and I cannot get the key out (once you pop the button out the key comes out; its some sort of safety feature). Would spraying some compressed air and WD40 in there work? Or should I go back to the pick N Pull in order to find a better one? Pictured a nicer version of my car.

Just because someone is going to say it, I'll beat them to it.

This is why we buy manuals.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing! Manuals don't have stupid fucking buttons that get stuck and make me late to class because I was "massaging" the button back out for 7 minutes in the parking lot.

you just need a new shift knob. A common thing on that car. DO NOT spray anything down there. Want me to get you a price?

WD40 tends to go gummy over time, which could possibly make matters worse – I'd recommend a silicone spray. Compressed air is safe, though.

If it's anything like the 850, the shift lever can be removed by just pulling REALLY REALLY HARD on it. If you can get it off, you've probably got a better shot at lubricating it, but otherwise, trying to shoot some spray lube in through the gap around the button would be better than nothing.

Also, this thread: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtop… indicates that you might be able to remove the button with the shifter in place. I haven't tried it myself, but it might be worth a shot.

I don't really need a price because I cant afford to buy new.

If you could though... is there a difference bewteen the R shift knob and a normal V70 shift knob?

The pick n pull had three 98-00 V70s last time. I think two had a black interior. Will they work or is there a specific R?

And also, thank you for the warning.. I was going to put some WD40 on it as soon as I got home.

Thanks for that link. Never even thought of just taking the flathead screwdriver RIGHT NEXT TO ME to pop it out easier. I'll try cleaning it out first. I mean its 15 years old and Im sure never cleaned so it must be disgusting.

And from what Ive read you do literally just pull as hard as possible towards the sunroof for it to come off.

I still don't fully understand that mess at all. I think it was for insurance money since I have an original key and all the windows are OEM from 99.

Damn car hates me

I tried out a 2007 GTI with a DSG that had EXACTLY the same problem.

I could move lever freely through all gears in about 1 second. I was this close to buying it though, as it was from a relative.

Thats so much cooler than I imagined! that's badass, does it have the chip in it or does your car not need a chip?

My Beetle is a '67, I'm not sure they had salt & vinegar chips back then, much less a chipped key.

I have an interesting driveway: two vintage Beetles, a VW Fastback, a Ranger, and a FoST.
